CHEEKY GIRLS' GUIDE TO. Cluj-Napoca

A recent addition to the Wizz Air network, Cluj-Napoca is the second largest Romanian city (Bucharest is the first). Its history dates to the Roman emperor Trajan and it is currently an important industrial, cultural and academic centre of excellence. Who better then, than the Cheeky Girls, natives of that very city and singers of that catchy classic "The Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum)" to act as our guides?

Born in Cluj-Napoca on Halloween ("We do bite after midnight!"), twins Gabriela and Monica have been on the celebrity radar since appearing in Popstars: The Rivals over five years ago. Kylie may be unchallenged as the UK's favourite pop import, but these curiously ageless Romanian twins remain in the public eye, unsullied by any rumours of drug abuse, diva-like antics or sex scandals. Gabriela's relationship with Liberal Democrat Lembit Öpik, the popular, wonkygrinned MP of Estonian descent, has only confirmed their air of quirky eccentricity (we're talking about the girls here, not the Liberal Democrats).

"The best place to stay at is the City Plaza Hotel (9-11 Sindicatelor, +40 (0)264 45 0101)," says Monica, the younger twin by 10 minutes and the bubblier of the two; Gabriela is quieter and more well informed. "It is near the National Park, in particular the lake, and the Hungarian Opera House. We haven't stayed there, but our mother has - she was very pleased with it!" They point out that Cluj-Napoca is a youthful city - it has the country's largest university. "It's very cosmopolitan, it's just buzzing! It's safe to walk around at night, it's not like London, though it's best to avoid the side streets." Well, you don't want some unsolicited ruffian to sneak up and touch your bum, do you?

The pair recommend Diesel Rapid taxis (0264 946): "They always take a short cut!" And the tram is a "must-try" for a romantic tour of their hometown. The main landmark? "It's the cathedral, next to the National Opera House."

EAT
Panoramic Restaurant 31 Serpuitoare Street, +40 (0)264 43 2080, www.panoramic-cluj.ro, When you arrive in a new city, the first thing you want to do is get your bearings. "The best place for a view of the city is Panoramic, a restaurant on the Cetatuia hill overlooking downtown," says Gabriela. "The food is continental and Romanian traditional. Our favourite dish is stuffed cabbage with sour cream." Escalop cu usturoi (steak with garlic), 220 lei.

Vila Tusa Hotel Sunny Hill, Colonia Faget Street, +40 (0)264 48 03 28, www. vilatusa.ro. This rustic venue is worth visiting in summer, as the sizeable terrace offers a fine view of the nearby forest. "Dessert in Romania is always homemade, especially the cakes," explains Gabriela. "For the best dessert, come to Vila Tusa. It's a traditional restaurant some distance outside Cluj, in the only forest in the area, called Faget. It's the best choice for a first date as it's very intimate. You get a warm welcome. They do a really nice homemade pancake, ice cream or papanasi - it's like a cheeseball or donut, but it's sweet with sour cream over it! It's great with strawberry jam, too!"

Diesel Bar 17 Piata Unirii, +40 (0)264 43 9043, www.dieselclub.ro. "You'll find this bar right in the centre of Cluj. It's the creme de la creme!" purrs Gabriela. "You can go there late afternoon, and later it turns into a nightclub. The service is exquisite! Here you'll find the best drinks and their cook is the best in the city." But what's a Cheeky Girl's tipple when they're at home? Monica: "I like the mojito. It's very much a summer drink, best with lots of ice." "My favourites are Cosmopolitan," reveals Gabriela, "and Sex on the Beach!"

MEET Botanic Garden 42 Republicii Street, +40 (0)264 592152. The Cheeky Girls are effusive in their praise for these gardens, which were built in 1920 and include a Japanese and Roman garden, the latter built around archeological remains of the Roman colony Napoca, including a statue of Ceres. "This is must be the first place to visit - it's really romantic," enthuses Monica. "It is the biggest in Eastern Europe, with the most species of plant! We went last summer, it's improved a lot and it's just beautiful."

Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania 21 Memorandumului Street, +40 (0)264 59 2344, www. muzeul-etnografic.ro. Founded in 1922, this museum in the Reduta Place is an excellent introduction to Transylvanian folk art and traditions, with ceramics, textiles and folk costumes. "Every single county in Romania has different costumes," says Gabriela. "Everything here is expertly handmade and very colourful. You get a feel for the traditional culture of Romania.

This must be the most interesting museum in Cluj."

Obsession 109 Republicii Street, www.obsessionclub.ro. "The nightlife has improved by 200% in the last five years," said Gabriela. "For 1980s to the present-day music, try After Eight (www.aftereight.ro). It's not very big but the atmosphere is great and it's in the heart of Cluj.

But if you want to be seen, the new nightclub Obsession is the largest venue. It's very glamorous, very high society and open until 6am. It's more expensive than the others, but trust me, it's worthwhile, especially on a Saturday night."

The number 8 bus takes 30 minutes to reach the city.

Bár a mellékutcákat jobb elkerülni.

* Vila Tusa, Hotel Sunny Hill, Colonia Faget Street, +40 (0)264 48 0328. -Romániában a desszert mindig házi készítésű, főleg a sütemények, - magyarázza Gabriela. - A Vila Tulsában pedig abból is a legfinomabbat szolgálják fel. Ez a tradicionális étterem Kolozsvártól kicsit távolabb, a Faget nevű erdős övezetben található. A palacsintáik isteniek, na meg a fagylalt és a papanasi is... ez olyan gombóc-féle, amit tejföllel szoktak nyakon önteni. Eperlekvárral mennyei!

* Diesel Bar, 17 Piata Unirii, +40 (0)264 43 9043. - A belváros kellős közepén van a Diesel. Ez most a legmenőbb hely, - dorombolja Gabriela. - Már késő délután nyitva van, éjszaka pedig klubbá alakul. A kiszolgálás kiváló! A italok fantasztikusak, és a szakács a legjobb az egész városban.

A Cheeky Girls nem fogy ki a dícséretekből, amikor a Botanikus kert kerül szóba. - Ide feltétlenül el kell jönni, mert nagyon roman-tikus! - lelkesedik Monica. - Ez Kelet-Európa legnagyobb botanikus kertje, rengeteg különféle növénnyel! Mi voltunk ott tavaly nyáron, nagyon sokat változott, és egyszerűen gyönyörű.

* Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania, 21 Memorandumului Street, +40 (0)264 59 2344. -A Reduta téren található múzeum kiváló, ha meg akarunk ismerkedni az erdélyi népművészettel és szokásokkal, - mondja Gabriela. - Itt minden kézzel készült. Igazi ízelítő a hagyományos román kultúrából. Szerintem ez a legérdekesebb múzeum a városban.

* Obsession, 109 Republicii Street. - Az éjszakai élet kétszáz százalékkal jobb lett az utóbbi öt évben, - mondja Gabriela. - A legtrendibb hely most az Obsession. Nagyon elegáns, és az emberek is. Reggel hatig tart nyitva. Igaz, hogy sokkal drágább, mint a többi hely, de elhihetik, hogy megéri! Főleg szombat este.

Bliźniaczki Gabriela i Monica, urodzone w Klużu w święto Halloween ("Po północy wysysamy krew!"), znalazły się w kręgu zainteresowania show-biznesu, kiedy ponad pięć lat temu pojawily się w Popstars: The Rivals. Te wiecznie młode rumuńskie bliźniaczki, nie wplątane w żadne skandale seksualne ani historie z narkotykami, cieszą się prawdziwą sympatią.

"Będąc w Klużu najlepiej zatrzymać się w City Plaza Hotel (9-11 Sindicatelor, +40 (0)264 45 0101)," mówi młodsza o 10 minut i bardziej energiczna z sióstr, Monica; Gabriela sprawia wrażenie lepiej zorientowanej: "To przy Parku Narodowym, blisko jeziora i Opery Węgierskiej." Podkreślają, że Kluż to młode miasto, z największym w kraju uniwersytetem. "Jest bardzo kosmopolityczne, aż kipi energią! " Bliźniaczki polecają taksówki Diesel Rapid (0264946): "Zawsze wybierają najkrótszą drogę!" Główna atrakcja miasta? "Katedra, niedaleko Opery Narodowej."

* Vila Tusa, Hotel Sunny Hill, Colonia Faget Street, +40 (0)264 48 0328, www.vilatusa.ro. Najlepiej usiąść na tarasie, z którego rozciąga się piękny widok na las. "Podają tu najlepsze desery. To najlepsze miejsce na pierwszą randkę - jest bardzo kameralne. Robią tu naprawdę dobre naleśniki, lody i papanasi."

* Diesel Bar, 17 Piata Unirii, +40 (0)264 43 9043, www.dieselclub.ro. "Creme de la creme!" pomrukuje Gabriela. "Możesz tu przyjść po południu, a potem Diesel Bar zamienia się w night-club. Najlepsze drinki i najlepsza kuchnia w mieście." A jaki jest ulubiony trunek Cheeky Girls? Monica: "Ja lubie mojito." "Mój ulubiony drink to Cosmopolitan," wyjawia Gabriela, "i Sex na plaży!"

GDZIE ZAIPREZOWAĆ

* Botanic Garden, 42 Republicii Street, +40 (0)264 59 2152. Cheeky Girls zachwalają Ogród Botaniczny. Jest tu ogród rzymski, wybudowany wokół archeologicznych pozostałości po rzymskiej kolonii Napoca, z posągiem bogini Ceres. "To pierwsza rzecz, którą trzeba zobaczyć," ekscytuje się Monica.

* Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania, 21 Memorandumului Street, +40 (0)264 59 2344, www.muzeul-etnografic.ro. Muzeum Etnograficzne w budynku Reduty to doskonałe wprowadzenie do świata fokloru i tradycji Transylwanii. "Tu nabierasz wyobrażenia o tradycji i kulturze Rumunii. To chyba najbardziej interesujące muzeum w całym Klużu."

* Obsession, 109 Republicii Street, www. obsessionclub.ro. "Muzyki od lat 80. do czasów współczesnych posłuchasz w After Eight. To niewielki klub, ale ze świetną atmosferą. Nowy night-clubu Obsession jest największy w mieście. Jest tu drożej, ale - wierz mi - wart jest swojej ceny."
