SNAPSHOT

What a great time to be in Brussels; party people should get to the Couleur Café festival (www.couleurcafe.be); families should check out the historical Ommegang Pageant, 29 June – 1 July (www.ommegang.be).

FROM AIRPORT TO CITY

The shuttle bus service is available between Charleroi Airport and Brussels-Midi. One way is €13.

FOOD

Blomqvists

14 Rue Francart, +32 4 8435 0644 If I’m needing a pick-me-up, I get over to the Swedish retro espresso bar Blomqvists near Boniface. It has freshly baked cinnamon rolls that cheer up even the dullest day.

L’Ultime Atome

14 Rue Saint Boniface, +32 (0)2 511 1367, www.ultime-atome.com In one of my favourite nooks in Brussels, this large, typically Belgian bar serves hearty meals, such as the chicken vol-au-vents for €10.50, in casual surroundings.

FRIENDS

The Tea House

5 rue de Rollebeek, +32 (0)2 511 817, www.the-teahouse.be Refresh at this cosy but serene tea house on one of the prettiest rows in Brussels. A wide selection of black and herbal teas is offered but I can never resist the classic Darjeeling at €5.50.

Woluwe Park

Explore the cluster of pretty parks in Woluwe along the Avenue Tervueren for plenty of quiet picnic spots, lakes and woodland.

INSIDER TIP

Don’t get killed by a bike: seriously, watch out for cycle-only lanes on the pavements, those riders are fast!
