SNAPSHOT

Krakow is famous for its Christmas Market. The Market Square is filled with stalls selling unique gifts, ornaments, and tasty treats at the grill. I can’t resist a cup of the market’s spicy mulled wine. Open throughout December.

FROM AIRPORT TO CITY

Matusek bus transfer in a coach to and from Katowice airport. The cost is €7.50 one-way, €15 return (Katowice) and €15 one-way, €30 return (Krakow).

FOOD

Bagelmama

ul. Dajwór 10, Krakow, +48(0)12 346 1646, www.bagelmama.com Bagelmama has been a hidden gem in Krakow for years. Now with its new location on historic Dajwor street, the soup ’n’ sandwich joint is set to make some serious waves. And it still does the best bagels in town.

Barolo

ul. Zwierzyniecka 23, Krakow, +48 (0)12 357 3183 This chic Italian wine bar is also a reliable spot for cheap, authentic eats. Generous portions and imported Italian ingredients are great value - a lunch at Barolo can easily work out to under €3 per person.

FRIENDS

Taawa

ul. Florianska 15, Krakow, +48 (0)12 422 7042, no website Krakow’s typical quaint cafés are all well and good, but sometimes a girl needs an excuse to glam it up. I head to Taawa in Kazimierz for a proper clubbing night out, complete with posh drinks and hypnotic beats.

Gaudi Cafe

ul. Wawelska 2, Katowice, +48 (0)32 253 8775 Warm up with a cup of tea while you wait for your departure at the Gaudi Cafe, just steps away from the central train station. It’s a little bit of Catalan charm in the centre of Katowice.

INSIDER TIP

Just an hour away from Krakow is Poland’s top winter destination - Zakopane. Skip the expensive hotels and look for a room or apartment instead. You’ll meet the locals and have your own space in a modern, central home dirt cheap.
