Finland’s premier rock festival organiser
The artist producer and logistics man behind Turku’s legendary Ruisrock festival carries the expectations of a legion of fans on his speed dial. "Bands are booked to appear at Ruisrock but from then on it’s my job to make sure it actually happens and they appear on stage every July."
"Slipknot’s show is going to be incredible this year. They’ve requested so many pyrotechnics and effects that I think it’s going to be the most spectacular ever. It provides a challenge for me because I have to get the experts in to create the effects and demonstrate to the fire department that we are safe!"
The peaceful town of Turku becomes a cauldron of rock for a few intense weeks in the summer when Mikko leads his core team of 100 to 150 Ruisrockers who in turn supervise an army of 1,000 employees over the three-day festival.
"I’ve been passionate about my job ever since I started to organise small parties and festivals as a hobby. I studied Cultural Events at college and it went from there. We also organise the two-day
Ankkarock on 1-2 August (www.ankkarock.fi) festival just outside Helsinki. The only drawback is that I never get a summer holiday."
So, does he find that personally meeting and greeting each band as they arrive at Ruisrock a bit of a busman’s holiday?
"Not at all! The acts that I personally really can’t wait to see at Ruisrock 2009 are the Danish band Mew, Glasvegas from the UK and !!! from the USA. Then there are the big Finnish names like Eppu Normaali, Tehosekoitin and Children of Bodom."
Welcoming bands to the venue is the moment when Mikko’s skills as a fixer are tested. "When the bands arrive I and check that they are okay and have everything they need. We have the saying that if everything works perfectly then you will have nothing to do – but when you have 60 bands to look after, things change. We have to fix the details."
This sounds easy enough until you remember that Morrissey once demanded that Ruisrock build him an entirely sanitised and separate vegetarian kitchen that had never seen meat to make his sandwiches.
"The most fun bands to work with are ones that have played here before. The Arc from Sweden said that they normally have 10 pages of requirements but they faxed us their details and just wrote ‘We trust you,’ because the last time they played Ruisrock they had such a good time."
Still, some bands do have a reputation to uphold. "Bloodhound Gang did ask for a US Sherman Tank to be provided backstage. Or failing that they wanted a person called Sherman Tank holding genuine ID. Thankfully they were joking and accepted the model tank that I found for them!"

- Tegoroczny występ Slipknota będzie niesamowity. Zażyczyli sobie tyle pirotechniki i efektów, że będzie to chyba ich najbardziej spektakularny popis. Stanowi to dla mnie pewne wyzwanie, ponieważ to ja muszę zorganizować ekspertów, którzy stworzą te efekty oraz przekonać straż pożarną, że wszystko pozostanie pod kontrolą!
Spokojne miasto Turku przez kilka intensywnych tygodni przygotowań do festiwalu staje się rockowym kotłem. Podczas samej trzydniowej imprezy Mikko i jego zespołowi 100-150 "Ruisrockerów" pomaga legion aż 1000 pomocników.
- Moja praca to moja pasja. Kiedyś organizowałem małe imprezy i festiwale jako hobby. Studiowałem na kierunku wydarzenia kulturalne i tak to się zaczęło. Teraz organizujemy również dwudniowy festiwal Ankkarock (www.ankkarock.fi) pod Helsinkami. Jedyną wadą mojej pracy jest to, że nigdy nie mam letniego urlopu – mówi.
Zatem osobiste witanie każdego zespołu przybywającego na Ruisrock to taki obowiązek?
- W żadnym wypadku! Sam nie mogę się doczekać występów duńskiej grupy Mew, Glasvegas z UK i !!! z USA. Na Ruisrock 2009 zaprosiliśmy również fińskich gigantów rocka, takich jak Eppu Normaali, Tehosekoitin i Children of Bodom.
Goszczenie zespołów to prawdziwy test dla umiejętności Mikko. – Kiedy zjeżdżają się kapele, sprawdzam, czy wszystko gra i czy niczego nie potrzebują. Gdyby wszystko działało bez zarzutu, pewnie nie mielibyśmy co robić, ale kiedy ma się 60 zespołów pod opieką, sprawy przybierają inny obrót. Musimy zająć się każdym szczegółem.
- Wydaje się to całkiem proste, ale to tylko pozory.
Występujący na Ruisrock Morrissey zażądał, by jego kanapki przygotowywane były w specjalnie zbudowanej, sterylnej kuchni wegetariańskiej, w której nikt nigdy nie przygotowywał mięsa.
- Najlepiej współpracuje się z zespołami, które już wcześniej tu grały. Szwedzki zespół The Arc twierdzi, że zwykle wysyła dziesięć stron wymagań, ale nam przefaksowali jedynie szczegóły swojego występu i napisali "Ufamy wam", ponieważ podczas swojego ostatniego występu na Ruisrock bawili się świetnie.
Oczywiście niektóre zespoły muszą zatroszczyć się o swoją reputację. – Bloodhound Gang poprosili, by dostarczyć im za kulisy amerykański czołg Sherman, lub ewentualnie osobę, która ma na imię "Sherman Tank" (po angielsku "Czołg Sherman"). Na szczęście był to tylko żart i zadowolili się modelem czołgu, jaki dla nich znalazłem.
