Cork kicks off the Irish summer festival season
Cork becomes Ireland’s rock ‘n’ roll capital between 18 June and 8 July as the Live At The Marquee series of gigs return to the city.
Taking place in a custom-designed, 5,000-capacity tent in the old Docklands area, the top Irish and international acts include Tracy Chapman, Simple Minds, Boyzone, Ne-Yo, Flo Rida, Kanye West, Rod Stewart, James Taylor and Lady GaGa .
Better-known to the taxman as Stefani Germanotta, 23-year-old Lady GaGa has recently sold the fourth millionth copy of her debut album, The Fame, and is a serious pretender to Italian-American Madonna’s vamp-pop throne.
"The record doesn’t take itself too seriously," she says of her chart monster. "It’s a good time. It’s full of joy. It’s a celebration. It’s all of the things back in the ’70s and ’80s that the party used to be. It was art and fashion and fun – and it was okay to be that way."
Partying is also top of the agenda for hip-hop heavyweight Kanye West, who’s been invited back following his stunning Marquee appearance in 2006.
"In terms of showmanship," enthuses promoter Peter Aiken, "Kanye is the best hip-hop act we’ve ever brought to Ireland. The crowd reaction he gets is phenomenal."
From relatively humble beginnings in 2005, Live At The Marquee has grown to become one of the biggest events in the European musical calendar.
"The first year it was mainly Cork people buying tickets, but now we get fans flying in from all over to see their favourite act, and then staying around to enjoy everything the city has to offer," Aiken notes.
Another person who can’t wait for Live At The Marquee to start is Ashley Keating, drummer with legendary Cork rockers The Frank & Walters and now also a DJ on local radio station RedFM 104-106, which will be giving the event extensive coverage.

Lady GaGa naprawdę nazywa się Stefani Germanotta, ma 23 lata i jest poważną pretendentką do tronu włosko-amerykańskiego pop-vampa, zajmowanego
do tej pory przez Madonnę.
- Ta płyta nie bierze siebie zbyt poważnie – Lady GaGa opowiada o swojej pogromczyni list przebojów. – Jest pełna radości i dobrej zabawy. To hołd złożony imprezowaniu lat 70. i 80. Chodziło wtedy o sztukę, modę i zabawę – i nikt nie miał tego nikomu za złe.
Imprezy to również priorytet grubej ryby hip-hopu, Kanye Westa, który został ponownie zaproszony na festiwal po swoim porywającym występie w 2006 roku.
- Jeśli chodzi o talent showmana – zachwyca się promotor koncertu Peter Aiken – Kanye jest najlepszym hiphopowcem, którego gościliśmy w Irlandii. Fani reagują na niego w fenomenalny sposób.
Live At The Marquee miało relatywnie skromne początki w 2005 roku, ale dziś jest jedną z największych imprez na festiwalowym kalendarzu Europy.
- Pierwszego roku bilety kupowali raczej ludzie z Cork, ale teraz fani zlatują się zewsząd, by zobaczyć swoje ulubione zespoły i przez kilka dni nacieszyć się tym, co miasto ma do zaoferowania – zauważa Aiken.
Kolejną osobą, która nie może się doczekać Live At The Marquee jest Ashley Keating, perkusista legendarnego zespołu rockowego z Cork, The Frank & Walters, i DJ
w lokalnym radiu RedFM 104-106, który będzie przygotowywać reportaże z festiwalu.
- Cały ten miesiąc będzie szalony – przyznaje z uśmiechem. – Mamy w planach koncert za koncertem i pewnie nie będzie zbyt grzecznie. Będzie fantastycznie!
