Belgium’s favourite son, Jean-Claude Van Damme, remembers where it all began
"They call me ‘the Muscles from Brussels’," smiles Jean-Claude Van Damme, almost coyly. "But really, I am just a normal man from Belgium, who once was skinny like a toothpick, read comic books and dreamt of being a star."
Back then, in Berchem-SainteAgathe, they called him Jean-Claude Van Varenberg. Few would have guessed that a Brussels municipality so peaceful it’s known as a "village in the city" would raise the high-kicking star of action blockbusters such as Hard Target, Universal Soldier and Time Cop. But it was there that young Jean-Claude’s dreams of being a star ignited at the local cinema. "My father took me to see movies like Ben Hur and Laurence of Arabia," he remembers. "In Belgium, the sky gets dark at six o’clock and those movies made me dream about blue skies and heroes saving people."
"My parents sent me to a farm in a village called Affligem, in the Flemish area of Brussels. In that village is a church. And one night I just woke up, like an epiphany. And walked to that church and started praying that I would become one of these guys like Laurence of Arabia."
Affligem, famous for traditional beer brewed from its beautiful ancient abbey, inspired Jean-Claude to chase the dream. He became a martial arts champion, bodybuilding’s Mr Belgium and even studied ballet for six years before wowing Hollywood with his skills. "I sent everyone this unbelievable picture of me, jumping above a car in the splits position!" he laughs. "And I went from a sleeping in a box and stealing food to the best penthouse and private jet."
Back in Belgium for his critically acclaimed film JCVD, in which he plays a version of himself, Van Damme isn’t religious but is sure his prayers were answered. Who knows, maybe there’s something special in Affligem’s abbey beer… www.jeanclaudevandamme.us

- Nazywają mnie "Mięśniak z Brukseli" – mówi Jean-Claude Van Damme, uśmiechając się nieśmiało. – Ale tak naprawdę jestem normalnym facetem, który był kiedyś chudy jak patyk, czytał komiksy i marzył o byciu gwiazdą.
Dawniej, w Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, znany był jako Jean-Claude Van Varenberg. Nikt nie spodziewał się, że ta spokojna dzielnica Brukseli wychowa gwiazdę kick-boxingu takich hitów, jak "Nieuchwytny cel", "Uniwersalny żołnierz" czy "Strażnik czasu". Ale to właśnie tutaj dorastał Jean-Claude, a filmy w miejscowym kinie stanowiły pożywkę dla jego marzeń. – Ojciec zabierał mnie na "Ben Hura" czy "Lawrence’a
z Arabii" – wspomina. – W Belgii o szóstej się ściemnia, a te filmy sprawiły, że marzyłem o jasnym niebie i bohaterach ratujących ludzi.
- Rodzice posłali mnie do wioski Affligem, na gospodarstwo rolne. Znajduje się tam kościół. I pewnej nocy przebudziłem się, jak w jakimś objawieniu. Poszedłem do kościoła i zacząłem modlić o to, abym mógł stać się taki, jak filmowi bohaterowie. Affligem, wioska znana z piwa warzonego w starym, pięknym opactwie, zainspirowała Jean-Claude’a. Stał się mistrzem sztuk walki, otrzymał tytuł Mistera Belgii w zawodach kulturystów, oraz przez sześć lat uczył się baletu, zanim olśnił Hollywood. – Wysłałem wszystkim niesamowite zdjęcie: jak przeskakuję nad samochodem w szpagacie! – śmieje się aktor. – I tak z mieszkania w kartonie na ulicy i niedojadania przeszedłem do luksusowego apartamentu i prywatnego odrzutowca.
Znów w Belgii z okazji kręcenia filmu "JCVD", opartego na jego biografii, Van Damme przyznaje, że choć nie jest religijny, jego modlitwy na pewno zostały wysłuchane. Kto wie, może w piwie z opactwa Affligem jest coś wyjątkowego.
