Fast food at the Venice Carnival
BIG MACS IN ST MARKS
Would you like a canal-side party with that? The sponsor of this year’s Venice Carnival is less surprising than you might think, says Sean Thomas
This year one of the highest of high society parties, the Venice Carnival, is being sponsored by McDonald’s. Yes, that McDonald’s. Maccy D’s. With the Golden Arches.
It certainly conjures up some incongruous images. Beautiful women in ghastly masks on misty piazzas with strange midgets hovering in the background? and Ronald McDonald the clown. Dashing gondoliers singing their way under the Bridge of Sighs? with extra fries. There will be McDonald’s logos discreetly dotted around the city during the festival and the two outlets in Venice will be tended by mask-wearing staff.
Incongruous yes, but certainly not unique. In fact, it’s not the first time that advertising has popped up in unexpected places.
